Lobsters, Crab, & Conch

Mark your calendar for August 1st, Opening Day of Lobster Season! Leave your scuba gear home, get your face mask on, have your spear in hand and prepare to hold your breath, ‘cuz hunting for Lobsters in the Bahamas is “fair chase”. Bahamian Spiny Lobsters love to live around coral reefs and crevices created by rocks and are very social, always keeping close to one another. Finding one usually means finding several. Prepare to load up the cooler, untie the Kayak and paddle just short distance from the house…it’s time to dive for dinner!

Not excited about diving for dinner? Let’s go Land Crabbing! As the sun sets and evening falls upon the island, the land crabs begin to stir. Known as the “Crab Run”, from May to July, thousands upon thousands of land crabs walk along the quiet streets of North Andros. Headlamp secure, protective glove on hand, and gunny sack in tow, the locals and tourists alike capture these crabs for the annual Crab Fest. This festival celebrates the catching, cooking, and eating of land crabs famously found on Andros. Crab is a popular food choice in the Caribbean, and is regarded as a delicacy, typically served on special occasions.

If you have never tried Conch, you are in for a treat!  Conch Salad, Crack Conch, and Conch Fritters are just a few of the local favorites and can be found almost everywhere on the island. Cracked conch is typically served with french fries for lunch, but it may also be served with classic Bahamian side dishes like peas and rice, macaroni, and plantains. Conch Chowder is also a delicious meal; hearty and flavorful, this soup is made with conch, vegetables, and spices. When you book your stay at Lured Inn, prepare your appetite for lots of Conch dishes!
